Science Specialist

The Region One Texas Science Collaborative is a yearlong program serving elementary school science teachers in a sustained professional development program using a combination of summer institutes, school-year workshops, and on-going classroom support. The program was designed in collaboration with partners from the University of Texas-RGV, local high-need school districts, and The Region One Texas Science Collaborative. The science cohort members will participate in at least 17 training days that include a 10-day summer institute, 3 school-year follow-up sessions, and 4 three-hour after-school update meetings. A total of thirty-five Science Teacher Mentors (STMs) and thirty-five Cadre Members (CMs) will be involved in this quasi experimental group. All prospective Collaborative teachers will have two options to participate in the Science Collaborative. Option A is the Immersion campus option that commits teachers to 100 contact hours of professional development and 24 hours of mentoring time with their cadre members. Sixteen campuses were selected for the Immersion Model with a total of 35 Science Teacher Mentors. The focus for the Immersion campuses is to target all of the campuses' 5th grade science teachers who will be more intensely immersed with their mentees by supporting them with a minimum of 24 contact hours. Option B, Non-immersion Model group, comprised of diverse elementary science teachers, will also be involved in the same program but will provide a minimum of 12 contact hours of mentoring and support to their Cadre Members. The key component of the program provides the treatment group with pedagogy and content classroom support from science education specialists and science experts. This program seeks to address and improve the targeted elementary science content Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills of Grade 5 5A and 5C, Grade 6 5A-D and 6A-C, Grade 7 6A and Grade 8 5A-E Matter and Energy. Data will be collected from all groups involved to measure teacher content knowledge, teacher instructional skills, and student achievement. STAAR data will be used to determine the effectiveness of the program on student performance. Immersion Campus data will be compared further to data from non-participating elementary schools in the same district to determine the impact of the program on the performance of Category 1.
