Galveston Country Regional Math Collaborative

Dr. Marguerite Sognier
Director Educational Outreach & Executive Director of SRT-STEM Center

The goal of the Galveston County Regional Collaborative (GCRC) teacher training program is to improve the academic achievement of students by providing high-quality, research-based, sustained teacher professional development (PD) that is aligned with the mathematics TEKS. This training is designed to substantially enhance classroom effectiveness by: stimulating teacher intellectual growth, improving teacher content knowledge, and upgrading teacher instructional skills. This approach is supported by research which has established: 1) teacher quality is essential for student success; 2) teacher PD must be sustained, intensive, and classroom focused. Our program's event timeline is structured to meet the needs of secondary math teachers, and encourages collaboration among MTMs through face-to-face and online experiences. Targeted teachers are at elementary, middle, and high school levels with the overwhelming majority from high needs districts. The focus for the immersion model will be teachers of Algebra, 3rd grade mathematics, and 8th grade mathematics. A collaborative, peer learning community established during the summer institute is maintained with mandatory follow up "sharing sessions", online experiences, instructional practice reflections/journaling, mentoring other teachers (CMs), and monthly ITM follow ups. The summer institute (July 17-28) focuses on the TRC specified TEKS, pedagogy, successful teaching strategies, leadership, and mentoring. Continuing PD, provided during the academic year, extends/expands summer training, provides follow up support on the summer PD, and addresses additional needs (determined from needs assessment survey). To further enable teachers we will also: 1) provide materials/supplies specifically chosen to meet the TEKS/designated needs, enabling classroom implementation; 2) loan equipment-supplies through our Education Resource Center; and 3) provide support/training in use of the materials provided. Program success will be evaluated by pre/post test assessments of teacher content knowledge, classroom observations of MTM instructional skills, teacher self-assessment surveys, and comparisons of student standardized test scores.
