Galveston County Regional Science Collaborative

Dr. Marguerite Sognier
Director Educational Outreach, Executive Director UTMB SRT-STEM Center

The goal of the Galveston County Regional Collaborative (GCRC) Science training program is to improve the academic achievement of students in science by providing high-quality, sustained professional development (PD) opportunities for regional teachers that: 1) are founded on scientifically based research; 2) address local needs identified by assessments; and 3) are aligned with the TEKS. This training is designed to substantially enhance classroom effectiveness by: stimulating teacher intellectual growth, significantly improving teacher content knowledge, and upgrading teacher instructional skills. This approach is supported by research that has established: 1) teacher quality is essential for student success; 2) teacher PD must be sustained, intensive, and classroom focused to have a positive and long-lasting impact on classroom instruction and student learning. Targeted teachers are primarily at the middle school levels with the overwhelming majority from high needs districts. The immersion model focus will be on 5th and 8th grade science teachers. A collaborative, peer learning community is established during the summer institute and maintained with mandatory follow up “sharing sessions” for STMs, online sharing experiences, mentoring other teachers (CMs), and monthly ITM follow ups. The mandatory 10 day summer institute (July 10-21, 2017-80 hours) focuses on the specified TEKS aligned Science content, pedagogy, successful teaching strategies, leadership skills, and mentoring skills. Continuing PD, provided throughout the academic year, extends and expands summer training, provides follow up support on the summer PD, and addresses additional specific needs (determined from a needs assessment survey). To further enable teachers we will also: 1) provide kits/materials specifically chosen to meet the TEKS/needs, enabling classroom implementation; 2) loan equipment/supplies through our Education Resource Center and 3) provide support/training in the use of materials provided. Success will be evaluated by pre/post test assessments of teacher content knowledge, STM instructional skills assessed by classroom observations, teacher surveys, and student standardized test score comparisons.
