The Region 4 Mathematics Collaborative is committed to furthering the long-range goals of the Mathematics and Science Partnership Program and the Texas Mathematics Initiative to enhance mathematics teaching inTexas through sustained and high quality professional development focused on algebraic thinking and reasoning. The Region 4 Mathematics Collaborative will increase the number of qualified mathematics teachers by developing a cadre of teacher leaders known as Mathematics Teacher Mentors (MTMs). This will occur through comprehensive and intensive classroom-focused efforts to develop teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical understandings related to algebraic thinking and reasoning. MTMs will extend the reach of the Region 4 Mathematics Collaborative by providing mentoring, professional development, and support to other mathematics teachers from the districts, charter schools, and private schools represented by the cadre.
The Region 4 Mathematics Collaborative will focus on recruiting and developing a minimum of 34 MTMs, at least 80% of whom serve students in secondary grade levels. Teachers selected to participate in the collaborative will be teachers who typically instruct underserved/underrepresented populations. The Region 4 Mathematics Collaborative will sustain the efforts of a minimum of three different high-need Local Education Agencies by targeting teachers in districts that serve a student population that is at least 40% economically disadvantaged. Additionally, at least five campuses will be immersion campuses and will target the eighth-grade mathematics programs, focusing on algebraic thinking and reasoning.
Each MTM will earn a minimum of 100 contact hours including 40 hours focused on algebraic thinking and reasoning and 12 hours of mentoring cadre members. Professional development will equip teachers with instructional materials and strategies that engage students in meaningful, relevant, mathematics- based experiences focused on algebraic thinking and reasoning and the integration of technology. MTMs will also develop andstrengthen their mentoring skills.
